Everything I Have Done Was All Called for by Sense of Duty

I have done everything in my power both to safeguard the legitimate interests of Shaolin Monastery and to promote its development. My motive in making such an exertion is twofold. On the one hand it is my duty as an abbot to make the Buddhist Chan Order flourish. On the other I want to do whatever I can to preserve traditional Chinese culture. I have been to many parts of the world. My tours were all called for by my sense of duty. Now that both the international situation and the domestic situation in China are very favorable to the development of the Buddhist Chan Order, it is obligatory for my colleagues and me to take advantage of the favorable climates, domestic and abroad, to do what our duty calls upon us to do. Otherwise we shall be left to forever regret for our sinful inertia in the face of the propitious climates.

It is no exaggeration to say that every step taken by Shaolin Monastery for promoting its growth has been greeted with adversity and opposition. Since we, Buddhist votaries, would not embark on any undertaking unless it is in the interest of our faith, I have been both pushy and apathetic in the face of the adversity and opposition, so long as they stem merely from a pique absolutely foreign to our faith. There is a common saying which says, “Different people have different voices”. If you would leave yourself susceptible to every comment from your surroundings, you were to find even nowhere to stand on the surface of the earth, and in that case those who have meant to frustrate you would just gloat over your fuss. As I have never swerved from my faith when engaging in any undertaking, my mind has always been at ease though I have found myself physically exhausted now and then.
